Tewkesbury Lodge Association Aims and History

Tewkesbury Lodge was a large house in Honor Oak Road near the bottom of Horniman Drive that had extensive grounds covering part of the hill that gives Forest Hill its name.   It was demolished early in the 20th century.   The gardens of the Lodge and surrounding fields were developed during the 1920's and 1930's, largely with detached or semi-detached houses.   Occupants of some of these homes formed the Tewkesbury Lodge Estate Residents' Association to oppose the construction of a tower block on the summit of the hill in 1960 - on the site now occupied by Horniman School.   The next campaign was also related to tower blocks - opposing high buildings as part of the Council developmentat the end of Wood Vale on the site of the former Honor Oak station.   The blocks built were very much lower than originally proposed.   Following early successes opposing undesirable planning developments, the Association's objectives rapidly broadened to encompass the protection of both the built and the natural environment.
