Future Improvements in Horniman Gardens |
|||
| Members of the Association attended meetings at the Museum in May and June of last year as part of a consultation exercise taking place on plans to upgrade the Gardens. For over 100 years the much-loved Horniman Gardens have provided the public with an opportunity to enjoy “the open air and the sunlight” that Frederick Horniman felt was so important to peoples’ well being. The Gardens now needed a significant investment to ensure that high standards were maintained, and visitor needs provided for now and into the future. The Museum would have to raise the majority of the funds required, so a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund was to be made in Autumn 2007. If accepted, the project would start in 2009. | |||
The areas that were under consideration were:
TLERA representatives asked to be updated as the plans evolved. Nothing more was heard until this Spring, when some of our members noticed that a Masterplan proposal had been posted on the notice boards in the Gardens, together with an invitation for people to send their comments to Janet Vitmayer, Director of the Museum. The situation was discussed at our February Committee meeting. Some areas of the plan suggested a restricted access/further erosion of this open public space. There are five references to ‘see detailed drawings’ on the Masterplan. Without these, it is not possible to understand exactly what is proposed and the extent of any redevelopment. A meeting with Horniman management has been requested to find out more about the proposals. An update will be given in the next newsletter. The Horniman Gardens is consulting with many local groups, more information is available here www.horniman.ac.uk/gardens/gardens2.php |
